Azariah’s prayer in the furnace is one of the most honest prayers in Scripture. He stands before God with nothing to offer—no sacrifices, no temple, no merits—only a humble and contrite heart. And that is precisely where God meets him. Psalm 25 echoes the same truth: God’s mercy is older than our sin and deeper than our failures.

Jesus’ parable in the Gospel brings that mercy into sharp focus. We are the servant who has been forgiven an unpayable debt. Lent invites us to remember that we live each day because God has chosen mercy over judgment. But Jesus also challenges us: if we have received such mercy, how can we withhold it from others?

Lent is not only about repentance; it is about allowing God’s mercy to reshape our hearts. The furnace becomes a place of transformation. Forgiveness becomes the path to freedom. And mercy becomes the truest sign of conversion.
